Saints Falter in Pair of Losses to Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Maryville baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Southern Arkansas, falling 8-4 in game one and 9-4 in game two. The Saints scored four runs in each contest but were unable to keep pace with the Muleriders' offense.

Game one featured a career day for Steven Schneider, as the Saints' center fielder went 2-for-4 out of the nine hole, launching the first two home runs of his career. He was not the only Saint to record his first homer, as switch-hitting designated hitter Matthew Rauser led off the opener with a solo shot to left field.

Schneider again led the Saints in RBIs in game two with two, while Dominic Sharp and Dominic Anselmo each added doubles.

GAME 1 | Southern Arkansas 8, Maryville 4
Just one at-bat into the contest, the Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead on Rauser's leadoff homer. The second inning saw Schneider extend the advantage to 3-0 with his first career home run.

Southern Arkansas chipped away from there, scoring one run on a wild pitch in the third and two more in the fifth on a pair of RBI doubles to knot the game at 3-3.

A clean sixth inning from Bradyn Bezanson set the stage for Schneider once again, as he put the Saints back in front with his second long ball of the day, making it 4-3.

The lead, however, did not hold. The Muleriders answered with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to secure the 8-4 final.

GAME 2 | Southern Arkansas 9, Maryville 4
Offense came early for both sides in the series decider. Maryville plated three runs in the top of the first, with two coming on Anselmo's double and one on Schneider's sacrifice fly.

Southern Arkansas responded immediately, erupting for four runs in the bottom half on a two-run homer and a two-run double to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The Muleriders added three more in the second and two in the third to build a 9-3 advantage after three innings. Maryville scratched one across in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Schneider, but the Saints ultimately fell 9-4.

UP NEXT
Maryville remains on the road for its next series, a three-game set at Pittsburg State. The series opens Friday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m., followed by 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
