ST. LOUIS – For the first time since April 3, 2023, the Maryville baseball team has defeated a top ten ranked opponent, this time doing it twice. The Saints knocked off the No. 9-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers in a pair of action-packed games at Weber Baseball Field.
Â
The Saints opened the doubleheader with a battle of two big innings, with the Saints and Lakers trading blows in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, with the Saints plating the decider in the bottom of the eighth off a
Jace Burton RBI single to find the final 7-6 score.
Grand Valley, down 5-1 going into the sixth, rallied eventually making it 8-8 going into the bottom of the eighth, where a clutch
Jack Meyer longball lifted the Saints into the lead for the 9-8 win and the series victory.
Meyer was the hero overall on the day, grabbing five RBIs with just two hits, both home runs as the Saints took down the Lakers.

GAME 1 | Maryville 7, #9 GVSU 6
A wild pitch in the third frame got the party started for the Saints as
Justin Gorski was able to take advantage and score to grab the Saints first lead of the day. A two run jack by the Lakers quickly erased that lead the next inning, with
Dominic Sharp going yard in response in the next half inning to leave it 2-2 after four frames.
Â
The Saints offense exploded from there with Burton doubling to score Gorksi, with the Meyer three-run bomb to follow to leave it 6-2. The balls kept flying out of Weber, much to the dismay of the Saints as GVSU using bombs in the sixth and eighth to tie the score.
Â
A two-out rally came in the eighth as Gorski singled up the middle, with a
Matthew Rauser knock moving him into scoring position. Burton did the job from there, ripping one up the middle for the game winning run.
Â
GAME 2 | Maryville 9, #9 GVSU
Grand Valley opened the scoring in the first, but the Saints answered immediately on an RBI groundout from
Jack Meyer to tie the game. Maryville grabbed the lead in the third and then broke it open in the fourth with three runs, highlighted by an RBI double from
Brady Kindhart and run-scoring hits from Gorski and Rauser to make it 5-1.
Â
The Lakers chipped away with a three-run sixth and then erupted for four runs in the eighth to tie the contest at 8-8. Maryville answered right away in the bottom half when Meyer launched a solo home run to reclaim the lead.
Â
Collin Greiner shut the door in the ninth to secure the win for the Saints.
