Sunken Tosses Complete Game Shutout to Lift Saints to Series Opening 11-0 Win

FAYETTE, Iowa. – The Maryville baseball team took the first game of its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) series against Upper Iowa behind a stellar outing on the mound from right-handed pitcher Braeden Sunken, rolling past the Peacocks 11-0 in eight innings.

Moving to 5-0 in conference play, the Saints saw Sunken tally five strikeouts while allowing just four hits and no runs. Offensively, four Saints recorded multi-hit games, with Dominic Anselmo leading the way with a pair of RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a clean first inning that saw the minimum come to the plate, Maryville struck in the top of the second. The scoring began with the lone extra-base hit of the day for the Saints, a triple by Dominic Sharp. A Brady Kindhart RBI single followed, scoring Sharp to make it 2-0.

A scoring lull settled in until the fifth inning, when a Jack Meyer RBI single stretched the lead to 3-0. The breakthrough inning came in the sixth, as a pitching change sparked the Saints offense.

Steven Schneider drew a walk and later advanced to third on a Sharp single. A Kindhart infield single loaded the bases for Greyson Rathgeb, who drove in a run with a single to left. Justin Gorski was then hit by a pitch to push the lead to 5-0.

The new pitcher did not slow the momentum, as an error plated another run before Anselmo delivered a two-run hit later in the inning to cap a six-run frame.

The run rule was enforced in the eighth when an errant throw by the catcher allowed both Meyer and Matthew Rauser to score. Sunken closed it out from there to secure the series-opening win.
