ST. LOUIS  – The Maryville men's volleyball team hit a blazing .435 and ran its winning streak to 10 with a dominating sweep of Quincy 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. The match was a contest between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings. Luke Martinez had nine kills, just one error on 10 swings for an .800 hitting percentage, while Makai Scott launched 11 kills and a .556 hitting mark.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints scored three straight points to grab a 10-7 lead. Jake Usher tipped in a kill and followed with a service ace. Martinez cranked in a kill for the three-point lead. QU closed to 10-9 but Maryville again scored three-in-a-row. After a Hawks error, Jayden Rookhuyzen put down a kill and teamed with Martinez for a block and a 13-9 edge. The Saints still led 16-12 before taking command with five consecutive kills, including back-to-back aces by Scott. A kill by Rookhuyzen ended the set.
 
Set two was tied at 5-5 before the Saints took the lead with a 4-1 run. Up 10-8. Rookhuyzen and Martinez had a block before Rookhuyzen had a solo rejection. Martinez pounded down a kill for a 13-8 advantage. Maryville went on another 4-1 surge and stretch the margin to 20-12, capped by a Martinez hammer. Leading 22-16, the Saints closed out the set with three straight, finished off by a Scott kill.
 
A quick 4-1 lead was established with three straight kills by Scott, Rookhuyzen and Martinez. The Hawks tied the set at 11-11. Maryville took a small lead and were leading 16-14 until going on a 4-0 surge. After two straight QU miscues, Scott had a kill. Another hitting error by the Hawks pushed the Saints ahead 20-14. Maryville was still up 21-16 before closing out the match with four of the final five points. Martinez capped his night with his ninth kill to end the contest.
