Saints Men's Volleyball Hits .531 and Storms Past Jamestown

ST. LOUIS  – The Maryville men's volleyball team ran its winning streak to 12 with a sweep of Jamestown in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Saints cruised past the Jimmies 25-12, 25-14, 25-16. As a team, the Saints posted a .531 hitting percentage, the second-highest mark in school history. The Maryville defense allowed the Jimmies to hit just .036 in the contest. Aidan Whitemountain led the Saints offensive barrage with 11 kills while hitting .733, while Makai Scott had seven kills on just nine swings for a .778 hitting mark.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Up 3-2 in the first set, the Saints scored five of the next six points. AJ Robateau and Scott combined on a block, and a Robateau kill closed the run for an 8-3 lead. The Saints did not allow Jamestown to score more than two points in a row and slowly stacked up points. Leading 19-11, the Saints had three straight points to push the margin to double digits. Maryville scored the final three points, capped by a Jake Usher ace for a 25-12 win. The Saints hit . 667 in the set with 12 kills on 18 attempts without an error.
 
The Saints scored the first three points of set two as Luke Martinez had a kill, and Whitemountain tacked on a second. The duo combined on a block for a 3-0 lead. Still up 7-6. The Saints reeled off nine straight points to take command. Rookhuyzen's kill started the run, and a solo block by Whitemountain handed the Saints a 16-6 lead. The lead never dipped below 10 points as the Saints wound up hitting .619 in the set.
 
In the final set, the Saints led 9-8 before scoring three straight. Martinez had a kill, and followed by a UJ error, Usher served an ace. The margin was still 15-12 until the Saints tallied five of the next six points. Rookhuyzen and Whitemountain had kills before the Saints defense forced three straight errors. The Saints closed out the set on a Peter Soczewka service ace.
