Homers Lift Saints to Doubleheader Sweep of Lewis

ST. LOUIS – The Maryville baseball team, powered by home runs by Nick Daugherty and Steven Schneider, took the series against Lewis, winning game one 7-4 and game two 4-0.

Game one saw the Saints jump out to an early three-run lead in the 2nd inning behind a Daugherty big fly, his first of the year, which plated three. For the later game of the twin bill, Schneider was a one-man recking machine, tallying homers in the third and the fifth to help the Saints to a 4-0 win.

Alex Bryan picked up the win in game one while Colin Greiner added on his sixth save of the year in relief. Brayden Rubel was the pitching star of game two, going 6 2/3 of two-hit ball to shutout the Flyers, with Noah Leingang picking up the final out.

GAME 1 | Maryville 7, Lewis 4
It was a familiar affair for Daugherty of the Saints as for the first time in his career, he would be lined up against his brother Chris, the starting right fielder for the Saints. Nick, the older Daugherty, would get the upper hand and early. After Dominic Anselmo singled and Aaris Stolte walked, the Saint's left fielder would crush a three-run homer over the left field wall to leave it 3-0.

Lewis struck back immediately in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI singles. Then they went on to tie it in the fourth on another RBI single, leaving it 3-3.

Back-and-forth it kept going as after an Anselmo double and a Tim Leark flyout that moved Anselmo over, Schneider hit a missile down the third base line to give the Saints a lead they never relinquished.

Jack Meyer added two more on an RBI double in the fifth, with Tim Leark's first career hit and RBI on his own double finding the seven runs the Saints would score in the ballgame.

Lewis plated one in the sixth but were unable to score against Greiner in the seventh, leaving the final 7-5.

GAME 2 | Maryville 4, Lewis 0
Meyer recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the first to give the Saints a lead just three at bats into the ballgame, one that Lewis was never able to overcome.

Rubel went onto sit down the first nine Flyers he saw in the contest, striking out five of them for his first time through the order. Schneider doubled the Saints lead in the third with his first home run of the day, a solo shot to left field off the scoreboard.

Lewis was able to get hits off of Rubel in the fourth and sixth, but that was all they could muster as Rubel ended with eight strikeouts.

Schneider's second homer came in the fifth, a two-run blast to the same part of the field for his ninth of the season.
