Late Inning Runs Bite Saints Again as UIS Sweeps Doubleheader

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Maryville baseball team fell victim to a pair of comebacks by the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars, with UIS walking off the opener of the twin bill for its second straight walk-off win before scoring the go-ahead run late in game two to complete the sweep.

The Saints tallied two home runs in game one, with Dominic Anselmo and Steven Schneider going back-to-back in the second inning. Cooper Walkoff and Jack Meyer each recorded two RBIs, but UIS rallied to force extras and walked it off in the bottom of the eighth.

Game two saw Brayden Rubel pitch six innings of two-hit ball, with an error leading to one run and a late triple producing the other. The Saints managed just four hits and one run, which came in the third inning, and left eight runners on base in the contest.

GAME 1 | UIS 7, Maryville 6
Anselmo and Schneider's back-to-back home runs in the second inning gave the Saints an early lead, and Walkoff's single to left in the fourth doubled it. The Prairie Stars cut the deficit to one in the fourth, using a bases-loaded walk, an RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to score three runs. Another sacrifice fly in the fifth tied the game at 4-4.

Maryville retook the lead in the sixth, scoring a pair on Meyer's 20th double of the season, tying a program record set by his former Lindenwood teammate turned Saint, Ambrose Russo. Meyer is now tied for the nation's lead in doubles.

UIS answered in the seventh with two runs to even the score, then plated the game-winner in the eighth. Noah Caceres delivered the walk-off for UIS for the second straight game.

GAME 2 | UIS 2, Maryville 1
Both teams plated runs in the third, with Matthew Rauser delivering an RBI single that scored Justin Gorski. UIS quickly responded, taking advantage of an E3 to tie the game on a 6-4-3 double play.

Rubel settled in from there, facing the minimum in the fourth and fifth innings. A leadoff triple proved costly in the sixth, as a wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run.

Maryville threatened in the seventh, moving the tying run to third, but was unable to push it across.
