Box Score EMPORIA, Kan. – Despite the first multi-goal game of sophomore Kelsey Wentland's career, the Maryville women's soccer team came up short for the second consecutive game, falling 3-2 to Emporia State.
 
Wentland scored in the 27th and 85th minutes.
 
Maryville's 0-2 start is its first since the 2013 season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing on the grass surface at ESU Pitch, a rarity in college soccer, the action started slowly for both squads. Helene Braren broke the silence with an attempt that rattled off the left post in the ninth minute. ESU collected the rebound and pushed down the field, producing a shot that went wide 30 seconds later.
 
The first goal came in the 27th minute. Carissa Speight delivered a perfect service that Braren headed toward Wentland, who headed it into the net to give Maryville a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, as the Hornets marched down the field and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
 
As the sun began to shine and the temperature rose, so did the action on the field. The Saints and Hornets traded dangerous attempts in the early stages of the second half.
 
The Hornets fended off a pair of Maryville corner kicks in the 60th minute before sending the second down the field and eventually scoring to take their first lead of the day.
 
ESU added another goal in the 83rd minute before Wentland pulled the Saints within one two minutes later. Maryville managed one more shot on goal but could not find the equalizer.

- The Saints controlled possession, holding the ball 60% of the time.
- Maryville won the shots battle 17-8, with 10 going on frame.
