Maryville University Athletics

WARRENSBURG, MO. – Taking a break from Great Lakes Valley Conference play, the Maryville University volleyball team traveled to Central Missouri. However, the Jennies narrowly held off the Saints 25-22, 25-20, 25-23. Ella Domian led the attack with a season-high 12 kills, while Mallory Sell put up 22 digs for the defense.
 
How it Happened
The Saints fell behind but eventually pulled even with three straight points for a 9-9 tie. Down by one, Leslie Longanbach had a kill to tie the score at 16-all. UCM took another one-point lead but the Saints answered with two straight. Emma Keele notched a kill, and an error by the Jennies gave Maryville an 18-17 lead. Down by one, Keele put down a ball for another tie at 19-19. UCM went ahead with two-in-a-row before Ella Domian notched a kill made it 21-20. But the hosts scored four of the next five points to take the opening set.
 
Maryville tallied five straight points to take the lead in set two. Natalie Frazier's kill started the run, and she and Joanna Gillen had a block. After two errors, Ellie Witthaus cranked down a kill for a 7-3 advantage. The Saints still were up 11-9 after a block by Witthaus and Longanbach and a kill from Keele. UCM went ahead with its own 5-0 run. Later, Longanbach and Domian had back-to-back kills before a Mallory Sell ace tied the score at 15-15. However, UCM used another 5-0 run. The Saints got as close as 23-20 but UCM won set two.
 
Down 10-8 in the third set, the Saints tied the score with a UCM error and a block by Domian and Longanbach. The Jennies used a pair of 3-0 runs to build a cushion. The Saints chipped away at their deficit and used a 4-1 run. Gillen and Longanbach had kills on the front end, and a pair of UCM errors brought the Saints to 20-19. Domian and Keele had kills to keep the Saints within one point, but the Jennies converted their lone match point for the win.
