ST. LOUIS – Playing leadoff to the Maryville University homecoming festivities, the Maryville women's soccer team snagged a 1-0 victory over the Missouri S&T Miners.
The lone goal of the contest came via a Miner mishap as they netted an own goal in the 22nd minute of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hailey Scheuer registered the first shot of the evening as both squads battled for position in the early goings. A strong throw-in by
Gabby Tucker just ten minutes in set
Ava Ernst up in the box where she sent a shot to the top right of the goal, being saved the S&T goalkeeper.
Neither team could maintain solid control as it felt as soon as one team marched down the field, the other stormed right back. The only score came finally in the 22nd minute. Ernst brought the ball up the nearside of the field, dishing it to
Izzy Oldroyd right in front of goal. The Oldroyd attempt was blocked, skipping to the side of the keeper where a retreating Miner inadvertently kicked it into their own net.
The score held throughout the remainder of the half. Maryville peppered the S&T keeper throughout the entire second half, with the Miners going blow for blow, with Maryville getting a prime opportunity for insurance in the 89th after Scheuer was fouled in the box.
The penalty kick attempt went off the woodwork, but the Saints held on for the win.
Agnes Vilen recorded three saves in the win.
