JoAnn Thompson scored 14 points, grabbed five offensive rebounds and blocked four shots to pace Maryville to a 67-56 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference action versus Rockhurst. The key to the Saints triumph was a 10-1 run to close the first half.
Holding a 10-9 lead seven minutes into the game, Maryville scored five straight points for a 15-9 margin. Alissa Oney sank a long jumper, Angela Pepowski scored on a spin move inside and she later added one free throw. The Saints still led 21-15 at the 7:13 mark before one free throw by Abby Duethman and a trey by Oney built a 25-15 lead. The margin was 25-17 before the Saints took charge with a strong run to end the first 20 minutes of action. Thompson canned two free throws, and Pepowski scored inside. Thompson hit two more free throws and added a jumper for a 33-18 lead with 35 seconds left in the half. The Hawks hit one free throw, but Kate Childs drew a foul in the waning moments and converted two more from the stripe for a 35-19 lead at intermission.
Rockhurst scored the first four points of the second half, but Childs drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to rebuild a 38-23 lead. The Saints still led 45-33 with 13 minutes to play until Pepowski scored off a Brittany Fish assist, and Duethman rained in a 3-pointer. Rockhurst hit one free throw, but Duethman answered with two from the stripe as the Saints built their largest lead of the night at 52-34 with just less than 10 minutes left in the game. Maryville maintained that margin with a 63-45 advantage on a Fish trey with 4:01 to play, and the Saints cruised to their seventh straight home win.
Thompson was an efficient 4-of-5 from the field and hit all six of her free throws to pace the Saints. Duethman added 10 points, while Samantha Robison grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Makayla Grahn scored 11 points to lead Rockhurst (4-11, 2-6 GLVC), and Allison Streich finished with a game-high 10 boards.
The Saints even their record at 8-8 overall, 4-4 in the league. Maryville hosts William Jewell Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest at Moloney Arena.
