In the Maryville men’s basketball exhibition opener at Miami (Ohio), the Saints jumped out to an eight-point lead before the RedHawks eventually rallied for a 73-64 decision at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio. The game was tied with less than nine minutes to play before the RedHawks edged ahead late.
Armon Provo led three Maryville players in double figures with 16 points.
After the RedHawks scored the first four points of the game, the Saints reeled off a 10-0 run to charge into the lead.
Trae Pemberton and Provo drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Saints to a 6-4 lead five minutes in. Provo then converted a layup in transition, and Pemberton stole a pass and finished for a 10-4 Maryville lead at the 7:04 mark of the first half.
The Saints still led 15-10 when Provo drained another deep 3-pointer for an 18-10 cushion more than 10 minutes into the game. Maryville kept Miami from scoring a basket for five minutes before the RedHawks slowly edged back to forge an 18-18 tie.
Myles Jerrett scored on a jumper in the lane to push the Saints ahead, and his tip in built a 22-18 advantage with 3:38 to play before halftime. However, Miami closed the half on a 15-2 run to take the lead 33-24 at intermission.
Early in the second half, Miami still led 37-26 before the Saints rattled off eight straight points. Provo had a three-point play, and Gerald Shaw hit a 3-pointer. Jerrett scored inside to pull the Saints to 37-34. Miami could not pull away as the Saints repeatedly kept making shots to stay close. Down 58-53 midway through the second half,
Max Mischkulnig, playing near his hometown in Ohio, hit two free throws. With 8:50 to play,
Asa Toney tied the score at 58-58 with a 3-pointer.
After a Miami 3-pointer, Melvin Turner converted a layup to pull the Saints to 61-60 at the 8:11 mark. The RedHawks used an 8-0 run to finally wrest control and held off the Saints in the final two minutes.
Provo converted 6-of-11 shots from the field en route to his game-high 16 points. Pemberton shot 66.7 percent from the field and finished with 14 points, while Toney chipped in 10 points. Mischkulnig snared a team-high seven rebounds for the Saints. Maryville hit eight 3-pointers in the game while holding Miami to just three treys. Will Felder led Miami with 15 points and nine rebounds.
