Provo Paces Saints to Win Over Ohio Dominican

Armon Provo led four Maryville players in double figures with 19 points as the Saints opened the 2012-13 season with a 69-56 triumph over Ohio Dominican in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Moloney Arena.
 
Down 21-19 with over eight minutes left in the first half, the Saints used an 11-3 burst to surge ahead. Max Mischkulnig converted a layup inside, and Myles Jerrett added two free throws for a 23-21 Maryville lead. ODU hit one free throw before Asa Toney hit a driving layup. Ohio Dominican sank a jumper but Jerrett drilled a 3-pointer, and Melvin Turner scored inside for a 30-24 Saints edge. Late in the first half, Toney’s trey build Maryville’s biggest lead of the half before the Saints took a 38-30 lead at the break.
 
ODU chipped away at its deficit in the second half and closed to 44-42 with 12:56 left in the game. The Saints answered with back-to-back treys by Turner and Trae Pemberton to rebuild a 50-42 cushion. Provo hit three of four free throws as the Saints stretched their advantage to double-digits 56-46 with 7:45 to go. The Panthers made one last charge and got as close at 56-50 with just under six minutes left to play but the Saints sealed the win with a 7-0 run. Turner scored inside, and Jerrett hit a fade away jumper. Darrin Young Jr. hit one free throw before Jerrett sealed the win with an emphatic dunk off a Toney feed.
 
In addition to his team-high 19 points, Provo pulled down seven rebounds while hitting 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Toney added 14 points, while Jerrett finished with 11 points and five boards. Turner hit 4-of-5 shots en route to 10 points. Gerald Shaw dished out a career-high six assists without a turnover to direct the offense. The Saints held ODU to just 33.8 percent shooting. Mark Minch led ODU with 19 points.
 
Maryville hosts Tiffin Sunday in a 2 p.m. game. The Dragons defeated McKendree 72-52 to open the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge.
