The Maryville men’s basketball team shot 53.8 percent from the field to register a 64-54 victory over Tiffin to close out the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge Sunday afternoon.
Asa Toney led the Saints with 16 points as Maryville’s defense held the visiting Dragons to just a 27.9 shooting percentage, including 5-of-31 from 3-point range.
The Saints surged out of the gate with eight straight points to take a lead it would not surrender the rest of the contest. Toney scored the first three points for Maryville, and
Gerald Shaw drove the lane for a layup. Shaw’s 3-pointer gave the Saints an 8-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. The Dragons pulled to within 10-4 before four straight points by
Myles Jerrett built a double-digit lead for Maryville at 14-4 at the 15:30 mark. Tiffin slowly edged to within 23-20 after a layup by Jonathan Sutherlin hoop.
Trae Pemberton knocked down a 3-pointer, and
Armon Provo finished a three-point play to restore a 29-20 cushion for the Saints at halftime.
The Saints still led 33-26 early in the second half before the Dragons used a 7-2 run to close to 35-32 five minutes after the break. A Provo layup and free throw gave Maryville some breathing room, and two charity tosses by Pemberton built the margin to 40-32. The Dragons would not fade away and charged back to 45-40 with seven minutes to play before the Saints put on the decisive run. Shaw scored on a layup to spark an 11-0 burst by Maryville. Toney and
Darrin Young Jr. scored on back-to-back layups for a 51-40 lead.
Max Mischkulnig powered inside for a layup, and after a Tiffin foul gave the ball back to the Saints, Shaw hit two free throws for a four-point trip. Toney sank one free throw to give Maryville a 56-40 lead with 3:32 left. The Saints held off the Dragons to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Toney had seven rebounds and five assists to go along with his 16 points for the Saints. Shaw and Provo added 12 points apiece to round out the double-figure scorers for Maryville. Joe Graessle led Tiffin (1-1) with 14 points but struggled from the field as he shot just 4-of-22 from the field. Eric Roby and Mike Boan paced the Dragons with nine boards each.
The Saints continue a busy stretch as they return to exhibition play with consecutive games at Division I schools Lipscomb and Belmont in Nashville.
