After opening the season with two victories in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, Maryville traveled to Nashville, Tenn., and battled before dropping a 73-55 exhibition game at Division I Lipscomb. The Bisons went on a 14-0 run midway through the second half before Maryville scored 10 straight points in a late comeback attempt.
Asa Toney sank a jumper as the Saints scored the first two points of the game. Lipscomb answered with eight straight points before a short jumper by
Melvin Turner brought Maryville to 8-4. After Lipscomb went ahead 10-4,
Gerald Shaw sank a 3-pointer as the Saints closed to 10-7 four minutes into the game. Toney scored on a layup as Maryville cut its deficit to 17-13 at the 10:46 mark of the first half.
The Bisons reeled off an 8-0 run prior to
Armon Provo sinking a 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 25-16 with six minutes to play before intermission. Provo again drilled a trey as Maryville was down just 30-21 but Lipscomb outscored the Saints 13-3 to close the first half.
Two minutes after halftime, the Saints trailed 47-27 before going on an 8-1 run.
Myles Jerrett converted a free throw to start the run, and Shaw scored inside. Lipscomb made one free throw before Turner sank a 3-pointer for the Saints. Toney rattled in a jumper to pull Maryville to within 48-35 with 15:43 to play in the game. Lipscomb seemingly took control of the game with 14 unanswered points. The Saints made a late charge with a 10- 0 run to claw back to 69-55 with 2:58 remaining but that was as close as Maryville would get.
Provo hit three 3-pointers and led the Saints with 10 points, while Jerrett had a team-high four rebounds. Deonte Alexander led four Lipscomb players in double figures with 16 points. Khion Sankey snared 12 rebounds for the Bisons who enjoyed a big advantage on the glass. The Saints came up with 11 steals and forced Lipscomb (1-1) into 19 turnovers.
The Saints face another Division I exhibition game Tuesday as they remain in Nashville to face Belmont in a 7 p.m. contest.
