Despite a double-double from
Abby Duethman, the Maryville women’s basketball team dropped a 74-68 decision to Missouri Western. The visiting Griffons used a late 8-0 burst to make the decisive run and remain undefeated on the season at 4-0. The Saints fall to 1-1 on the year.
Missouri Western stretched a four-point halftime lead to 41-34 before the Saints unleashed an 8-0 run to surge into the front.
Rita Flynn powered inside for a layup, and Duethman scored from in close to cut the deficit to 41-38. Flynn again scored inside, and
Brittnye McSparron’s driving basket gave Maryville a 42-41 advantage three minutes into the second half.
The score was tied at 49-49 when Duethman hit a 3-pointer and sank one free throw on the next trip as the Saints led 53-49 at the 11:49 mark. The teams traded the lead twice before the Griffons went up 61-58.
Shelby Miller tied the game with a deep 3-pointer, and a jumper in the lane by McSparron handed the Saints a 63-61 lead. However, that would prove to be the last lead of the night for Maryville. The Saints hit one free throw to tie the game at 64-64 with 3:18 to play, but Missouri Western went on its game-winning run. The Saints kept hitting the offensive glass to give themselves second chances but the team missed 10 straight shots during the Griffons run.
Duethman tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds, six on the offensive end, to pace the Saints attack. Miller sank four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points, while McSparron added 15 points and four steals. Heather Howard led Missouri Western with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jallisa Lewis scored 11 points, and Alicia Bell had 10 rebounds.
With her 15 points, Duethman moved into second place on the Saints all-time scoring list with 1,165. In first place with 1,329 is Heather Toma. Maryville is next in action at a tournament hosted by Drury University in Springfield, Mo., Nov. 23-24.
