Saints Down Vulcans 78-70 to Open Hawai'i-Hilo Tournament

The Maryville men’s basketball team closed the game against Hawai’i-Hilo on a 15-6 run en route to a 78-70 win to start the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament in Hilo, Hawai’i. The Saints remain unbeaten this season at 3-0 and play the second of three games in the tourney against NCAA qualifier Montana State-Billings Tuesday night.
 
With 5:49 left to play in the game, the host Vulcans took a 64-63 lead. Melvin Turner sank a 3-pointer to put the Saints on top by two. Maryville forced a miss, and Gerald Shaw added two free throws to give the Saints a 68-64 lead. The teams traded points and CJ Brown sank two charity tosses to bring UH-Hilo to 72-70 at the 1:32 mark.
 
The Saints had to chances to extend their lead until the Vulcans regained possession. Armon Provo came up with a steal and fed Shaw for a short jumper as a 74-70 lead in the final minute. The Saints defense forced a Vulcans from 3-point range, and Provo padded the Maryville lead with two more from the free-throw line. UH-Hilo had one final shot misfire, and Asa Toney iced the game.
 
 Shaw led the Saints with 18 points and tied for the team high with six rebounds. Toney finished with 17 points and four assists, while Provo chipped in 14 points and four assists. The Saints took advantage of their trips to the line and hit 15-of-18 free throws. Maryville shot 51.9 percent from the field and drilled nine 3-pointers. Kiel Myers led Hawai’i-Hilo (1-2) with 17 points.
