Saints See Second-Half Lead Slip Away in Narrow Loss to Montana St-Billings

In the second game of the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament, Maryville let a second-half lead slip away in a 54-50 loss to Montana State-Billings Tuesday night in Hilo, Hawai’i. The defeat was the first of the year for Maryville (3-1).
 
The game did not start well for Maryville as the Yellowjackets scored the first nine points of the game before Asa Toney got the Saints on the scoreboard with two free throws. Max Mischkulnig scored five straight points as Maryville drew to 9-7. The Saints found themselves down 16-9 before reeling off a surge of 10 straight points. Armon Provo started the run with a jumper, and Myles Jerrett completed a three-point play. Gerald Shaw’s jumper tied the game at 16-16 before a Jerrett 3-pointer gave the Saints their first lead of the night at 19-16. With 5:37 left before halftime, Shaw sank a jumper as the Saints went up 21-16. At intermission, Maryville settled for a 23-20 cushion.
 
Melvin Turner scored for the Saints to start a 9-0 run to open the second half and extend the lead. A jumper by Toney and a trey built a 32-20 lead for Maryville. The Yellowjackets responded by scoring seven straight points to charge back into the game. Shaw’s three-point play with 12 minutes left rebuilt the Maryville edge to 36-29. However, Montana State-Billings used an 11-0 run to take its first lead in the second half. The Yellowjackets were up 46-41 with six minutes to play before Trae Pemberton hit a jumper and two free throws to pull Maryville to within 46-45.
 
The teams traded points as Toney sank two charity tosses with 1:15 to go to keep the Maryville deficit at just one point. Shaw followed with two from the line as the Saints were down 50-49 with 28 seconds left in the game. David Arnold made two free throws for the Yellowjackets to rebuild a 52-49 advantage with 16 ticks left. MSUB fouled Toney with five seconds left. The junior hit the first free throw but the Saints were unable to track down the offensive rebound. Jarrell Crayton sealed the win with two more free throws with four seconds remaining for the final margin.
 
Toney led the Saints with 13 points, and Shaw added 11 points. The Saints made 18-of-23 from the line but hurt themselves with 23 turnovers. Jarrell Crayton led the Yellowjackets (3-1) with 25 points and nine rebounds.
 
Maryville closes out the tournament Wednesday with a 9 p.m. (CT) contest against Western New Mexico.
