The Maryville men’s basketball team closed out its action at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resorts Thanksgiving Tournament with a 70-58 victory over Western New Mexico Wednesday night in Hilo, Hawai’i. The Saints finished the tourney with a 2-1 mark and improved to 4-1 on the year.
The Saints burst out of the gate with a 9-0 run to start the game.
Armon Provo hit a jumper on Maryville’s opening possession, and
Gerald Shaw scored a bucket for a 4-0 lead. Provo knocked down a 3-pointer to force a WNMU timeout.
Myles Jerrett continued the Saints run with another jumper for a 9-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest. The Mustangs finally got on the scoreboard at the 17:17 mark.
After Jerrett converted one free throw, Provo drilled a 3-pointer as the Saints built a double-digit lead at 13-2. Western New Mexico eventually trimmed its deficit to nine points, but Shaw and Myles sank consecutive treys for a 26-13 lead 11 minutes into the game. Asa Toney’s jumper at the halftime buzzer gave the Saints a 39-31 lead at intermission.
After WNMU scored a basket to start the second half, Provo scored inside and Shaw’s 3-pointer built a 44-33 cushion for Maryville.
Melvin Turner sank a shot from beyond the arc as the Saints took a 48-34 lead with 15:05 to play. Toney drained a 3-pointer with just under 13 minutes left to go for the Saints biggest advantage of the game at 53-37. The Mustangs used a 10-2 run to get the margin down to 55-47. With 4:21 left to play, WNMU got as close as five points until two free throws by Provo handed Maryville a 60-53 lead. After the Mustangs hit one free throw, the Saints tallied five unanswered points to rebuild a 65-54 margin with 2:30 remaining. WNMU edged to within eight points, but the Saints hit four of five free throws in the last 90 seconds to hold on for the win.
Shaw led the Saints with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Provo added 13 points and six boards, while Toney finished with 11 points and eight assists. Jerrett paced Maryville with seven rebounds. The Saints hit 11 3-pointers on the night. Chad Carter led Western New Mexico (0-4) with 15 points.
The Saints return to the Mainland and are next in action Monday when they host Lincoln for a 7 p.m. game in Moloney Arena.
