Behind a record-setting shooting performance, the Maryville men’s basketball team sprinted past Lincoln 85-67 Monday night in Moloney Arena. The Saints shattered school records by shooting 72.7 percent from the field (32-of-44) and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from 3-point range. The Saints led 14-9 six minutes into the game before a layup and 3-pointer by
Armon Provo built the first double-digit lead of the night. The Blue Tigers closed the gap to 22-14 at the 12:13 mark but the Saints embarked on a 10-3 run to surge ahead.
Josh Montague powered up for a score inside, and Provo added a long jumper. After Lincoln hit a trey, the Saints received back-to-back 3-pointers by
Trae Pemberton and Provo for a 32-17 led with eight minutes left before halftime. However, the Saints hurt themselves the rest of the first half with turnovers and did not score as the Blue Tigers closed to within one point at the break.
Lincoln continued its strong play in the second half and eventually took a six-point lead after six minutes of action. The Saints were down 53-48 before reeling off eight straight points to take the lead.
Asa Toney hit two free throws and a layup to start the burst. A Montague layup on a backdoor cut gave Maryville a 54-53 lead, and
Max Mischkulnig scored inside to close out the run. The Saints advantage stood at 67-63 with six minutes left to play before Maryville finally took charge of the contest. Maryville closed out the game on an 18-4 run to put the visitors away.
Provo hit 9-of-11 shots from the field en route to a season-high 23 points. His 81.8 percent shooting percentage tied for the second-highest mark in a game in program history. Provo also had five assists without a turnover and blocked two shots. Toney added 19 points and Pemberton registered career highs with 16 points and six assists.
Melvin Turner hit all five of his shots and finished with 12 points. Charles Cole led Lincoln (1-6) with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Cedric Ridle added 18 points.
Maryville’s previous record for shooting was set against Centre College Dec. 30, 2000. The Saints 3-point shooting mark was set at Fontbonne Jan. 31, 2004, when the team hit 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Saints improve to 5-1 on the season and host Trevecca Nazarene Friday in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
