The Maryville men’s basketball team jumped out to an early 16-2 lead and held off Trevecca Nazarene 70-57 Friday night at Moloney Arena. The victory pushes the Saints mark to 6-1, the best record after seven games in program history.
The score was tied 2-2 when
Armon Provo scored on a layup to start a 14-0 run by the Saints.
Gerald Shaw drained a trey from the left wing, and
Trae Pemberton added two free throws and a 3-pointer for a double-digit lead. Provo tipped in a miss and Shaw sank two more from the stripe for a 16-2 Maryville lead eight minutes into the game.
The Trojans crawled back into the game using a 12-2 run to close the gap to 18-14.
Asa Toney sank a 3-pointer, and after a TNU bucket, Shaw added a deep trey for a 24-16 Saints lead. Maryville took a 26-22 lead into halftime.
The Trojans got as close as 34-32 five minutes into the second half until the Saints put on a 7-0 run to retake control.
Darrin Young Jr. scored on a reverse layup and completed a three-point play. After
Max Mischkulnig drained two from the free-throw stripe, Pemberton scored inside for a 41-32 lead with 12:20 left in the game. Trevecca Nazarene edged back to 43-36 before Maryville took its biggest lead of the night. Josh Montague sank a 3-pointer out of the corner, and
Melvin Turner added his own trey and two free throws for a 51-36 lead with 8:46 remaining. The Saints held off the Trojans for their third straight win.
Pemberton registered career highs with 18 points and nine rebounds to pace the Saints. Turner scored 11 points, and Provo provided 10 points. Mischkulnig helped out the rebounding efforts with six boards. Maliek Daniels and Marquise Rudolph led the Trojans (1-7) with 13 points and seven rebounds apiece.
The Saints are next in action Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they travel to the University of Missouri-St. Louis to begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
