THIS WEEK: After taking a break for the holidays, the Maryville men’s basketball team (10-2) travels to future Great Lakes Valley Conference Truman State for a 3 p.m. game Sunday, Dec. 30. The Bulldogs will join the league beginning 2013-14.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs are 4-5 including a split of games against GLVC opponent Quincy. Mike Carlson leads the team with 16.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Tom Norton adds 10.8 ppg, and Cory Myers has handed out a team-best 33 assists.
MORE ON MARYVILLE: The Saints have won two straight and are 10-2, the program’s best mark after 12 games. Asa Toney leads the team with 16.1 ppg and 55 assists. Armon Provo is second on the squad with a 13.6 scoring average and has a team-high 20 steals. Gerald Shaw chips averages 12.2 ppg Head coach Kevin Carroll is in his third year at Maryville and has compiled a 30-35 overall record.
PREVENTING THE THREE: In the latest NCAA statistical report (Dec. 16), the Saints rank fourth in the country in 3-point field goal percentage defense at 24.5 percent. Elizabeth City State leads the nation at 20.9 percent. Maryville is 18thth in the nation in scoring defense at 59.6 ppg.
FRESH FACES: The Saints have bolstered their roster with six new players, including three freshmen, to the squad this season. Also rejoining the team is Darrin Young Jr. who missed the 2011-12 season due to a knee injury.
LAST WEEK: The Saints returned to their winning ways with an 86-54 win over Missouri Baptist as Asa Toney recorded his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Toney factored in Maryville’s 75-72 win at Lincoln as he poured in 26 points.
