The Maryville men’s basketball team improved to a perfect 4-0 in true road games with a 70-57 victory at Truman State Sunday in Kirksville, Mo. The win is the third straight for the Saints who improve to 11-2, its best record after 13 games in program history.
The Bulldogs led for most of the first half and took their biggest lead midway through the first half 24-16. The Saints responded with a sparkling 16-1 run, including 11 straight points.
Gerald Shaw scored on a layup, and
Max Mischkulnig converted inside to begin the burst.
Trae Pemberton tallied on a short bucket, and Mischkulnig tied the game at 24 with another hoop.
Armon Provo drilled a 3-pointer to put the Saints on top. After one Truman State free throw,
Asa Toney added a jumper, and Provo’s trey boosted the Saints to a 32-25 advantage with three minutes to play in the first half. Maryville settled for a 40-33 edge at the break.
The Bulldogs slowly chipped away at their deficit and closed to 43-41 three minutes into the second half. The Saints still held a 50-45 margin before putting the game away with a 10-0 run. Mischkulnig powered inside for a basket, and Pemberton drained another 3-pointer. Provo added a layup, and Toney’s trey closed out the run for a 60-45 lead with six minutes to go. Truman State never got closer than 12 points as the Saints cruised to the victory.
Armon Provo led four Saints in double figures with 21 points. Asa Toney scored 18 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Trae Pemberton added 13 points, while Max Mischkulnig added 10 points. Myles Jerrett returned to the lineup and hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds. The Saints shot 50.9 percent from the field and sank nine 3-pointers. Mike Carlson led the Bulldogs (4-6) with 15 points.
The Saints are back in action Thursday, Jan. 3, when they return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Kentucky Wesleyan.
