Asa Toney poured in a career-high 30 points as the Maryville men’s basketball team posted a thrilling 72-65 overtime victory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The win was the first for the Saints over the Tritons in 14 attempts. Maryville continues the best start in program history and improves to 7-1 on the season, 1-0 in the GLVC.
The Saints were down 50-42 with seven minutes left before rallying to force overtime.
Darrin Young Jr. scored on a driving layup to spark the comeback.
Armon Provo came up with a steal, pushed the ball up to
Trae Pemberton who led a two-on-one fast break and fed Young for a another bucket. UMSL scored to push its advantage to 52-46, but
Melvin Turner drained a 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 52-49 with five minutes to play.
After the Tritons made one free throw, Provo drilled a trey as the shot clock was winding down to cut the deficit to 53-52 with 3:56 to play. UMSL scored a to push its lead back to 55-52 but Toney converted a 3-pointer from near the top of the key to forge a 55-55 tie with two minutes remaining in the second half. In the waning moments of regulation, the Saints defense forced a difficult UMSL shot as the game moved to overtime.
The Tritons hit two free throws to start overtime to retake the lead, but Toney scored to tie the game. After making a defensive stand, Toney scored on another drive to push the Saints into a 59-57 lead. UMSL made one free throw, but Provo made another 3-pointer as the Saints jumped ahead 62-58. The Tritons sank two more from the line, but Pemberton and Provo scored on back-to-back possessions as the Saints surged ahead 66-60 with one minute to play. The Saints hit six straight free throws down the stretch and the Maryville defense kept the Tritons at bay. Maryville had a perfect shooting performance in overtime as the Saints hit all five shots from the field and all six free throw attempts.
Toney hit 9-of-18 from the field, four 3-pointers and all eight free throw attempts en route to his 30-point output. Young tied his career high with 16 points on 7-of-10 shots from the field. Provo finished with 10 points, while Pemberton recorded eight points and eight rebounds. Charlie Woods led UMSL with 22 points. The Saints defense held the Tritons to 39.3 percent shooting from the field, including 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from 3-point range.
