Women's Basketball Hosts UIS for Think Pink; Travel to Quincy

THIS WEEK
The Maryville women’s basketball team (13-10 overall, 9-6 GLVC) hosts its final regular season home game Thursday, Feb. 16, when Illinois Springfield comes to Moloney Arena for a 5:15 p.m. game. The Saints will honor Tori Tyner, who will be completing her eligibility this season, prior to the game. The contest is also Maryville’s “Think Pink” game to raise awareness for breast cancer, and the Saints will be donning pink jerseys. Maryville heads to Quincy Saturday, Feb. 18, for a 1 p.m. game.
 
TOPPING 1,000
Junior Abby Duethman hit a 3-pointer late in the Missouri S&T game to surpass the 1,000-point milestone for her career. She became the seventh Maryville player to reach that mark and has amassed 1,001 points in her career. With five more points, she will move past Lyndsey Bell for sixth place on Maryville’s all-time scoring list.

ABOUT ILLINOIS-SPRINGFIELD
The Prairie Stars are 9-14 overall, 4-11 in the GLVC and won their last outing against Rockhurst. Alyssa Palmer tops the team at 13.0 ppg and is second in the conference in assists at 4.2 per game. Baily Beale is second at 12.4 ppg, and Elizabeth Kelly is tied for third in the GLVC at 8.3 rpg. The Prairie Stars score 65.7 ppg and allow 70.3 ppg. The Saints recorded a 76-79 win in Springfield Jan. 26.
 
ABOUT QUINCY
The Hawks are 17-6 overall, 12-3 in the GLV and have won eight straight games. Ali Schwagmeyer and Linsay Henke are one of the best 1-2 combos in the league. Schwagmeyer leads the team with 17.1 ppg and averages 7.7 rpg, while Henke adds 13.4 ppg, shoots a GLVC-high 57.4 percent from the field and a conference-best 9.0 rpg, including 9.9 rpg in league games. The Hawks are second in the GLVC in scoring at 72.6 ppg and give up 61.7 ppg. Quincy leads the GLVC in 3-pointers made at 7.7 per game.
 
MORE ON MARYVILLE
Junior forward Abby Duethman leads the way with 15.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg. She is shooting 49.4 percent from the field and is second on the team with 45 assists. Freshman guard Shelby Miller is second on the team with 11.3 ppg and has hit 36 3-pointers to go along with 43 steals. Sophomore guard JoAnn Thompson leads the team with 62 assists and 48 steals.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The Saints were on the short end of a 62-46 decision last Thursday to GLVC West Division co-leader Drury. However, Maryville bounced back to defeat Missouri S&T 65-63 when Rita Flynn grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a layup with 1.9 seconds left for the dramatic win.
 
THAT IS WHY THEY ARE FREE
Maryville is shooting a sparkling 80.0 percent (335-of-419) from the charity stripe to rank second in the country (as of Feb. 13). Shelby Miller leads the team and GLVC at 88.4 percent (61-of-69), while Kate Childs is converting at 87.0 percent (40-of-46) at the stripe.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Saints close the regular season Thursday, Feb. 23, when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis for a 5:15 p.m. game.
 
THE 2012 SCHEELS GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Saints have earned a berth to the 2012 SCHEELS GLVC Women’s Basketball Championship and are battling to host a home game in the first round, which would take place Sunday, Feb. 26. The top four teams all earn a bye, and the four first-round winners advance to the quarterfinals which take place Thursday, March 1, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill.
