Maryville pitcher Brittany Mayfield surrendered only three hits over four innings but North Alabama tallied the only run of the game in the fifth inning to register a 1-0 decision over the Saints to close out day one of the Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala.
After setting down UNA in order in the first, Mayfield worked around two singles in the second to keep the game scoreless. With two outs in the fourth, Sarah Graham drilled a ball to center for a double and Maryville’s first hit of the game. However, she was stranded there in scoring position as the game remained 0-0.
In the fifth, Meredith Brown picked up a single right back up the middle but Maryville could not advance her any further. UNA used two hits, one stolen base and a fielder’s choice to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Alex Carr laced a single through the left side, and she took second on a passed ball. The Saints (0-2) could not drive in the game-tying run as UNA pitcher Breanna Riley went the distance to pick up the win and improve to 1-1.
Maryville continues play Saturday at the Charger Chillout with games against Truman State and Florida Tech.
