The Maryville men’s basketball team dropped a defensive battle 55-44 Saturday afternoon at Quincy in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Trailing 6-4, the Saints ripped off a 10-0 run to surge ahead. Jacob Dulle started the run with a 3-pointer, and Ryan Shotkoski sank two free throws. Armon Provo drained a shot from beyond the arc, and a Corey Washburn layup built a 14-6 advantage. Quincy closed to 14-11 but Maryville scored the next five points. Washburn and Provo had back-to-back layups, and a Trae Pemberton free throw pushed Maryville to a 19-11 lead. Quincy slowly chipped away at the deficit and forged a 24-24 tie at halftime.
The Hawks scored the first six points of the second half while the Saints offense struggled until Shotkoski finally scored to draw Maryville to 30-26. Quincy hit a 3-pointer but Provo answered with a trey to make it 33-29 with 13:44 left to play. Neither team could hit a field goal but the Hawks sank six free throws to push out to a 10-point lead with eight minutes to go. Shotkoski hit a 3-pointer to pull Maryville to 47-39 with over two minutes remaining but the Saints would not get any closer as they fell to 13-12 overall 6-11 in the conference.
Provo led the Saints with 14 points, while Washburn and Shotkoski both added 10 points apiece. Asa Toney grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out six assists. For Quincy (18-7, 11-6), Justin Brock and Scott Hahn both finished with identical numbers of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Maryville closes out the regular season Thursday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
