Despite a monster effort of 23 points and 16 rebounds by Abby Duethman, the Maryville women’s basketball came up just short 89-81 in its upset bid at Quincy Saturday afternoon. All five Saints starters scored in double-figures.

Fueled by Rita Flynn, the Saints scored eight straight points to jump to a 10-2 lead five minutes into the game. Flynn hit two free throws, and Shelby Miller scored on a layup. Flynn followed with two straight jumpers and a 10-2 Maryville lead. Quincy slowly back to tie the game at 12-12 before Breann Baker’s bucket put the Saints back ahead. After two more ties, the Lady Hawks edged out to a 20-16 lead. The Saints scored 10 of the next 13 points. JoAnn Thompso scored two straight and two free throws by Alissa Oney pushed Maryville to a 26-23 advantage with 6:12 left in the first half. Neither team led by more than three until the break. Erica Lorton made one free throw for a 37-36 lead but Quincy hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 39-37 lead at the half.

Quincy started the second half with a rush and used a 12-4 lead to build a double-digit lead at 51-41. Duethman’s three-point play cut the deficit to single digits. Maryville trailed 57-48 with over 13 minutes left and consecutive scores by Duethman and Miller cut the margin to 57-52. Quincy answered with six straight points to rebuild a double-digit lead. Quincy still led 85-72 with just over a minute to play before the Saints put on a late rush. Duethman had a three-point sequence, and after QU missed the front end of a one-and-one, Childs’ 3-pointer drew the Saints to 85-79 with 36 seconds left. The Lady Hawks hit one free throw, and Duethman’s layup cut the deficit to 86-81 with 16 seconds remaining. However, the Hawks hit three of their last four free throws to hold off the Saints charge.

Duethman hit 8-of-17 shots from the field and 10 of her career-high 16 rebounds came on the offensive end. She also tied for the team lead with four steals. Childs added 14 points, and Miller added 12. Flynn and Thompson added 10 points apiece.

Quincy won its 10th straight game and improved to 19-6 overall, 14-3 in the league. Linsay Henke scored 24 points and snared eight rebounds as QU also had all five of its starters score in double figures.
