Women's Basketball Travels to UMSL; Hosts GLVC Tournament Game Sunday

THIS WEEK
The Maryville women’s basketball team (14-11 overall, 10-7 GLVC) closes out the regular season Thursday, Feb. 23, when they travel to city rival Missouri-St. Louis for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Maryville is sponsoring free transportation for all students who would like to attend the games. Vans will leave the Simon Center parking lot at 4 p.m. Thursday. THE 2012 SCHEELS GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Saints will host a first-round game of the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. The University will be hosting a pre-game party with free food including hot dogs, chips, dip and soda starting at Noon in front of Simon Center.
 
The Saints will be looking to win their first-round game and advance to the quarterfinals which take place Thursday, March 1, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill. The semifinals are Saturday, March 3, and the finals will take place Sunday, March 4.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS
The Tritons are 10-15 overall, 5-12 in the GLVC. Caitlyn Moody leads UMSL with 13.6 ppg, while Devonna Smith adds 11.5 ppg and ranks second in the league at 8.6 rpg. Deaven Omohundro has handed out 75 assists to lead UMSL. The Tritons score 63.1 ppg and give up 67.7 ppg. The Saints won the first meeting 77-69 played at Moloney Arena Jan. 16.
 
MORE ON MARYVILLE
Junior forward Abby Duethman leads the way with 15.3 ppg and 8.1 rpg. She is shooting 48.5 percent from the field and is third on the team with 50 assists. Freshman guard Shelby Miller is second on the team with 11.9 ppg and has hit 37 3-pointers to go along with 47 steals. Sophomore guard JoAnn Thompson leads the team with 69 assists and 56 steals.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK
Shelby Miller had a steal and hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and the Saints went on to defeat Illinois Springfield 89-82. Miller and Kate Childs finished with career highs of 26 and 24 points respectively, while Abby Duethman added a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Saturday at Quincy, Duethman tallied 23 points and hauled down a career-high 16 rebounds but the Saints fell 89-81.
 
THAT IS WHY THEY ARE FREE
Maryville is shooting a sparkling 79.5 percent (368-of-463) from the charity stripe to rank second in the country (as of Feb. 19). Shelby Miller leads the GLVC and ranks 10th nationally at 89.2 percent (74-of-83), while Abby Duethman is converting at 84.6 percent (88-of-104) at the stripe.
 
FRESHMAN RECORDS
Shelby Miller is closing in on the record for points by a freshman. She has tallied 297 points and is just four away from breaking the mark of 300 scored by current Maryville junior Abby Duethman. In addition, Miller has broken the freshman record for 3-pointers with 37.
 
CLIMBING THE CAREER SCORING CHART
Junior Abby Duethman hit a 3-pointer late in the Missouri S&T game to surpass the 1,000-point milestone for her career. She sits in sixth place on Maryville’s all-time scoring list with 1,044 points. Ahead of her in fifth place is Kim Lesley who tallied 1,069 points.
