After shooting 65.4 percent in the first half, the Maryville men’s basketball team could not regain its shooting touch after intermission and fell 77-53 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the regular-season finale. The Saints qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and will travel to Southern Indiana Sunday, Feb. 26, in a 2 p.m. game in Evansville, Ind.
Against the Tritons, the Saints were down 13-11 just over seven minutes into the contest, but Maryville used a 12-2 run to surge into the lead.
Gerald Shaw drained a 3-pointer, and
Armon Provo added a long jumper for a 16-13 Maryville lead.
Asa Toney scored inside before UMSL tallied to cut the gap to 18-15. Shaw rattled in another trey, and a layup by Toney gave the Saints a 23-15 lead just past the midpoint of the first half. UMSL stayed close and trimmed the gap to 33-30. Shaw then was fouled after he made a 3-pointer and his subsequent free throw build a 37-30 lead. Provo scored on a backdoor cut off a Corey Washburn feed as the Saints took their largest lead of the game at 39-30. Maryville eventually took a 41-37 lead at the break after hitting 17-of-26 shots from the field.
Toney and Provo scored on consecutive possessions for Maryville to start the second half for a 45-37 lead. After UMSL scored, Provo hit another 3-pointer as the Saints matched their biggest lead at 48-39. However, the Tritons tallied 12 straight points to take a 51-48 lead. Washburn scored to cut the gap to 51-50 with 10 minutes to play but that would prove to be the final basket of the game for the Saints as UMSL slowly pulled away the rest of the game.
Toney led the Saints with 19 points, while Provo finished with 11 points and Shaw had 10 points. Washburn hauled down a career-high nine rebounds to pace Maryville on the glass. Troy Long led UMSL with 22 points as the Tritons claimed the West Division crown with an 18-8 overall record, 13-5 in the GLVC. The Saints complete the regular season at 13-13 overall, 6-12 in the league.
