Men's Basketball Begins GLVC Tournament at No. 9 Southern Indiana

THE 2012 SCHEELS GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Maryville men’s basketball team (13-13 overall, 6-12 GLVC) opens the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Championship Sunday, Feb. 26. The Saints are the No. 12 seed and play at No. 5 seed Southern Indiana. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at USI’s Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Ind. If the Saints win their first-round game, they will advance to the quarterfinals which take place Friday, March 2, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill. The semifinals are Saturday, March 3, and the championship game takes place Sunday, March 4.
 
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
The Screaming Eagles are ranked ninth in the country and are 20-6 overall and finished with a 12-6 slate in the GLVC. Brandon Hogg tops USI with 15.8 ppg. Isaac McClure is second on the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). Lawrence Thomas has handed out 105 assists, while Kenyon Smith leads the team with 6.5 rpg. USI scores 69.8 ppg and are the top defensive team in the league at 59.4 ppg. USI leads the GLVC in opponent field goal percentage, allowing foes to shoot just 40.3 percent, and in rebounding margin at +9.9 per game. The teams did not meet during the regular season.
 
MORE ON MARYVILLE
Sophomore Asa Toney leads the Saints in scoring (12.2 ppg), assists (72) and is tied for the team lead in steals (37). Junior Gerald Shaw is second on the team with 10.9 ppg and has a team-high 59 3-pointers. Freshman Armon Provo adds 10.4 ppg and is second on the squad with 64 assists. In the last NCAA report (Feb. 19), Maryville is 17th in the country in 3-point field goals made with 8.8 per game and 23rd in scoring defense at 62.4. Head coach Kevin Carroll is in his second year at Maryville and has compiled a 20-32 overall record.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The Saints shot 65.4 percent in the first half at UMSL Thursday night but was unable to keep up that torrid pace after halftime and dropped a 77-53 decision. Asa Toney led the Saints with 19 points, while Armon Provo added 11 points and Gerald Shaw finished with 10. Corey Washburn grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
