Southern Indiana Rallies Past Saints in GLVC Men's Tourney Action

Maryville men’s basketball put on a strong rally in the second half but saw Southern Indiana, which is ranked ninth in the country, pull away late 68-51 in the first round of the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Evansville, Ind. The Saints close out the season with a 13-14 record, nearly doubling their win total from a year ago.

Southern Indiana, the No. 5 seed in the GLVC Tournament, scored the first points of the game but Mike Ford answered for the Saints. USI stretched its advantage to 8-2 before Armon Provo tallied to cut the lead in half. Asa Toney scored to pull Maryville to 10-6 until the Screaming Eagles recorded 11 of the next 12 points to assume a 21-7 lead. Toney scored for the Saints to break Southern Indiana’s run before Provo took over. The freshman scored on a layup and was fouled for a three-point play. On Maryville’s next trip, Provo threw down a dunk as the Saints closed the gap to 21-14. USI settled for a 23-16 lead at the break.

Early in the second half, Southern Indiana built a 28-16 lead before the Saints put on a sterling comeback. Toney scored on two straight drives to ignite a 14-2 run. Gerald Shaw drilled a 3-pointer, and Corey Washburn sank two free throws to pull the Saints to 28-25 three minutes after halftime. Southern Indiana scored a bucket, but Toney hit a short shot prior to a 3-pointer by Shaw which forged a 30-30 tie. USI went ahead on a three-point play, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Ryan Shotkoski and Shaw handed the Saints their first lead of the day 36-33 with 13:02 left in the contest.

The Screaming Eagles sank two free throws before Provo scored on a layup for another three-point lead 38-35 with 12 minutes to play. However, Southern Indiana went on a 15-0 run to take command of the game. Toney drained a 3-pointer as the Saints cut the gap to single digits 50-41 with 6:47 remaining. However, Maryville could not get any closer as Southern Indiana advanced to the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament.

Provo led the Saints with 15 points, while Toney chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brandon Hogg led Southern Indiana (21-6) with 20 points, and Isaac McClure added 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
