Shelby Miller poured in 23 points, and
Abby Duethman recorded her fifth straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as Maryville defeated Missouri-St. Louis 75-61 in the first round of the 2012 SCHEELS GLVC women’s basketball tournament. With the win, the Saints (16-11) advance to take on No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky in the quarterfinals Thursday, March 1, at 8:30 p.m., at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill.
The Tritons scored the first four points of the game and led by as much as 13-6. Maryville responded with an 11-2 run to take its first lead 17-15 with the 7:11 mark.
Alissa Oney sparked the run with a 3-pointer, and after an UMSL score,
Kate Childs tacked on another trey. Duethman scored in the lane, and one free throw by
Breann Baker tied the game at 15-15. Duethman was fouled and sank both to give Maryville the advantage. The score was tied at 23-all until the Saints scored the last 10 points of the half. Miller scored on a driving layup and added a 3-pointer. Childs sank two from the stripe, and after forcing an UMLS turnover, Miller drained a late 3-pointer to boost the Saints to a 33-23 lead at intermission.
UMSL scored on the first possession of the second half, but Miller converted four straight free-throw attempts for a 37-25 margin. The Tritons edged closer to 39-31, but Erica Lorton hit a tough jumper in the lane and Duethman rained down a 3-pointer from the left for a 44-31 lead with 14:55 remaining in the game. UMSL cut its deficit to single digits, but Duethman and Lorton registered buckets in the paint for a 51-38 lead. Maryville’s lead never sunk below 11 points and grew to as many as 18 as the Saints defeated the Tritons for the third time this season.
Miller took advantage at the free-throw line and converted 10 charity tosses as well as three 3-pointers, while also handing out a team-high four assists. Duethman hit 6-of-12 from the field, all four of her free throw attempts to go along with three assists and four steals.
JoAnn Thompson snared eight rebounds, six on the offensive end, came up with five steals and blocked two shots. Kelly Carter led UMSL (10-17) with 21 points, while Devonna Smith finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Saints defense forced UMSL into 26 turnovers.
