Gerald Shaw tied his career high with 23 points and Maryville hit five straight free throws down the stretch to register a 73-64 triumph over Rockhurst Saturday in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday afternoon. Shaw made 8-of-11 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and all three free throws as the Saints snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Saints started the contest quickly and jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Gerald Shaw scored on a layup, and Mike Ford followed with a long jumper.
Armon Provo made one free throw, and
Asa Toney’s bucket gave Maryville a seven-point lead three minutes into the game. The Saint defense kept Rockhurst scoreless for almost five minutes until the Hawks finally hit a 3-pointer. The Hawks slowly came back into the game and tied the score at 9-9.
The contest was tied three more times until Shaw drained a 3-pointer to put the Saints on top 20-17 at the 8:50 mark. Rockhurst scored to cut the gap to one before Provo tallied five straight points on two free throws and a 3-pointer. Maryville led by six until Toney tacked on a trey to build a 31-22 cushion with 2:50 left in the first 20 minutes. The Hawks answered and eventually tied the game at 33-33. However, Provo sank two more from the free-throw stipe as the Saints entered the break with a 35-33 edge.
Rockhurst tied the game early in the second half before Shaw completed a three-point play to reestablish a Saints lead. Provo swiped a pass and fed Corey Washburn for a throw down dunk and a 40-35 lead three minutes after halftime. Maryville was up 42-41 before a Provo jumper sparked a 7-0 run. Shaw added a fastbreak bucket, and Tyler Waite’s 3-pointer handed the Saints a 49-41 advantage with 13:59 left to play.
Rockhurst edged closer and got the deficit to four points at 53-49. Washburn scored in traffic to steady the Maryville lead and start another 7-0 burst. Shaw added a 3-pointer, and Washburn’s layup gave the Saints their biggest lead of the day at 60-49 with just over six minutes to play. The Hawks tallied four straight points but Waite answered with a hoop and a free throw to rebuild a double-digit lead 65-55. Toney added two charity tosses for a 67-55 lead with 3:25 remaining. Rockhurst made one last charge with a 9-1 run to close to 68-64 with just 1:35 left. The Saints hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
In addition to his 23 points, Shaw tied for the team lead with five rebounds. Provo added 15 points and five rebounds, while Toney added 11 points. Brandon McCann paced Rockhurst (7-13, 4-8 in the GLVC) with 19 points.
The Saints improve to 10-10, 4-9 in the GLVC. Maryville hosts Oakland City Monday, Feb. 6, in a 7 p.m. game, which is the final non-conference contest of the season.
