Box Score Maryville-Rockhurst Boxscore

Playing in her hometown of Kansas City, Mo., Maryville junior Abby Duethman posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Saints dominated in a 78-54 win at Rockhurst Saturday afternoon. The victory was the 12th of the season for the Saints, the most since they moved up to Division II.

Rockhurst scored the first basket of the game, but Maryville responded with eight straight points to surge ahead. Duethman hit a free throw to put the Saints on the scoreboard, and Rita Flynn followed with a three-point play. Flynn scored on Maryville’s next possession, and Shelby Miller converted a layup for an 8-2 lead. The Hawks slowly rallied and took an 11-10 edge, but Duethman tied the game with a free throw, and Alissa Oney drilled a 3-pointer for a lead Maryville would not give up the rest of the way. Angela Pepowski scored in the lane to give the Saints a 15-11 advantage. Rockhurst edged closer at 20-19, but Duethman scored on a layup and sank two free throws. Kate Childs scored for a 26-19 lead just under five minutes until halftime. Leading 29-24, the Saints scored seven of the final nine points to assume a 36-26 lead at intermission.

Maryville’s lead was still 40-30 until it used a 7-0 burst to take command. Duethman rattled in a trey, and Oney and JoAnn Thompson both hit two free throws apiece to build a 47-30 lead at the 13:52 mark. Breann Baker scored on a layup and sank a 3-pointer to give Maryville a 20-point lead, 54-34, with 9:47 left in the game. The Saints’ advantage never dipped below 15, and grew to as much as 27.

Duethman hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including all three 3-point attempts, and seven free throws en route to registering her fifth double-double of the year for the Saints. She also led the team with three assists. Flynn tied her season high with 13 points, and Childs finished with 11. The Maryville defense held Rockhurst (5-16, 2-11 GLVC) to just 28.8 percent shooting and did not allow any Hawks to reach double figures in scoring.

The Saints, who have won six of their last seven, improve to 12-9 overall, 8-5 in the GLVC. Maryville returns home Thursday to host Drury.
