Maryville softball dropped a pair of games at No. 7 Indianapolis Saturday afternoon as unearned runs played decisive roles in both games. The Greyhounds rallied for a 5-1 win in game one and took the finale 4-1. Due to excessive rain on campus, the games were played at Indiana Central Little League fields.

Neither team could get on the scoreboard through the first three innings. Maryville pitcher Julie Jouglard kept Indianapolis off the scoreboard until the Saints struck for a run in the top of the fourth. Shelby Steinkamp led off the inning with a solo home run for the Saints’ first hit of the day. Jouglard kept the Greyhounds off balance through five innings. With one out, Indy put a runner aboard. However, Indianapolis took advantage of two errors and pieced together four hits to score five unearned runs to take the lead. Jennifer Maynez singled to start the seventh inning and moved to scoring position, but the Saints were unable to get any closer.

In the second contest, unearned runs again contributed to the Saints troubles. Indianapolis pushed across single tallies in the bottom of the first and second innings to jump to the early lead. The Saints drew one score back with a tally in the fifth. Tara Macias worked a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Meredith Brown put a ball in play to center that was mishandled allowing Macias to dash home with a score to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Kelsey Kapitzke reached on a fielder’s choice and moved into scoring position on Maynez’s single to center field. However, Kapitzke was forced out at third on another fielder’s choice as Maryville’s late rally came up short. Indianapolis closed out the win with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Saints slip to 3-11 overall, 0-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis improves to 12-1 overall, 6-0 in the league.
