The Maryville Saints were looking to register their first home win of the season but Truman State kept the Saints in check to win both games on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis. The Bulldogs pulled away late in the first game en route to an 8-1 decision, and TSU held off a late Maryville charge to edge the Saints 4-2 in game two.
Truman State scored a run in the top of the first and added another tally in the fourth before the Saints responded in the bottom of the inning. Kelsey Barbeau singled up the middle, and Jennifer Maynez doubled down the left field line as the Saints cut the gap in half. Truman State scored three times in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1. The Saints nearly answered immediately as they put the first two runners on in the bottom of the sixth. Shelby Steinkamp and Kelsey Kapitzke had back-to-back singles to start the frame. Barbeau smashed a drive to center, but TSU centerfielder Laura Miller made a diving grab for a double play to extinguish the Saints’ comeback attempt. The Bulldogs closed out the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh.
In game two, the Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead before the Saints mounted a comeback. Kapitzke hit a long home run over the left field fence to get Maryville on the scoreboard. One out later, Lacy Emrick smashed another solo homer, this one to left center, as the Saints drew to 3-2. Alex Carr drew a walk off reliever Ashley Rotkvich and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, Carr was stranded at second to end the threat. The Bulldogs pushed across an important insurance run in the top of the seventh, setting up a tense bottom of the seventh inning. Kapitzke walked, and with two outs, Carr drew her second consecutive free pass to bring the potential game-winning run to the plate. Karlie Twisselman launched a shot deep to right center but the ball was tracked down deep in the gap as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
The Saints slip to 3-15, while Truman State improves to 12-11. Maryville returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play as it heads to Rockhurst and William Jewell for two doubleheaders this weekend.
