Maryville softball notched its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season when it claimed a dramatic 4-3 win in game two of a doubleheader at Rockhurst as Kelsey Kapitzke hit two home runs, including the game winner. The Hawks won the opener between the teams 4-1.

In the first game, the Saints scored an unearned run to take the lead. Shelby Steinkamp doubled and stole third. Sarah Graham put the ball in play as it skipped by Rockhurst’s first baseman for a 1-0 Maryville lead. The Hawks tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first. Neither team scored in the next two innings before Rockhurst used a two-RBI double to cap a three-run outburst to pull out the game as the Saints were held to four hits.

Game two was a thriller as the teams went back and forth before the Saints tallied the winner in their final at-bat. Maryville struck in the top of the second when Kelsey Kapitzke launched a solo home run. Rockhurst tied it with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning. The Saints scored in the third on an RBI single by Sarah Graham, and Celci Mueller later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 Saints lead. The Hawks scored one run in both the third and fourth innings to force a 3-3 tie setting up the late inning heroics. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Kapitzke launched her second homer of the game as the Saints went back up 4-3. Brittany Mayfield set the Hawks down in order in the bottom of the seventh as she went the distance to pick up her first win of the year.

The Saints are 4-16 on the season, 1-9 in the GLVC. Rockhurst now stands at 4-17, 2-8 in the conference.
