Saints Softball Narrowly Misses Doubleheader Sweep

William Jewell game one boxscore

William Jewell game two boxscore

The Maryville softball narrowly missed out on a doubleheader sweep at William Jewell and instead had to settle for just winning game one 3-2, while the Cardinals had to rally late for an 8-7 victory.

Kelsey Kapitzke singled home Celci Mueller as the Saints jumped to a quick 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Sarah Graham singled home Shelby Steinkamp as Maryville extended its advantage to 2-0. Kapitzke had her third straight single and moved up two bases on back-to-back groundouts. Jennifer Maynez delivered a clutch two-out single, which would prove to be the eventual game winner. Julie Jouglard threw six innings and scattered five hits to pick up the victory. Kristyn Caldwell came on in relief in the seventh and shutdown the Cardinals to notch the save.

Game two featured two wild lead changes and a late William Jewell rally to prevent the Saints from taking both games. The Cardinals tallied three runs in the first and second innings to fly out to an early 6-0 lead. The Saints were unable to dent the scoreboard until erupting for a stunning seven runs on nine hits in the top of the seventh. The first four Maryville batters all hit safely with Mueller and Graham delivering the first two RBIs. Kelsey Barbeau and Karlie Twisselman recorded back-to-back RBI singles as the Saints drew to 6-4. Maynez again had a crucial hit as her triple tied the game at 6-6. Finally, Lacy Emrick delivered the go-ahead hit as Maryville capped off the outburst. However, William Jewell had a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, and Eileen Greenwood plated the game-winning run to deny the Saints a stunning comeback win.

Maryville is now 5-17 overall, 2-12 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals stand at 10-9, 5-5 in the league.
