The Maryville softball team battled through a thrilling 12-inning game before visiting Quincy edged the Saints late by a 4-1 score. The Hawks’ offense picked up in game two as QU also took game two 12-4.
In the first game, Maryville pitcher Julie Jouglard and QU hurler Lauren Francis put up matching zeros for 10 innings. The Saints had a golden scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth but left the bases loaded. Karlie Twisselman singled, and Shelby Steinkamp reached on a QU error. Laster, Celci Mueller drew a walk to load the bases but the Saints were stymied as the game remained scoreless. In the top of the 11th the Hawks finally scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Saints responded with a tally of their own to tie the game. Steinkamp singled and reached third base on a wild pitch. Kelsey Kapitzke singled in the game-tying run. However, the heroic were denied in the top of the next inning as the Hawks strung together five hits to score three runs. The Saints managed to get a runner on but were unable to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate as the Hawks held on.
In the second game, the Saints fell behind quickly as Quincy tallied two runs in each of the first three innings. The Hawks built an 8-0 cushion before the Saints got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Steinkamp and Kapitzke both reached scoring position, and Mueller plated the first run with a sacrifice for Maryville. Kapitzke later scored on a wild pitch as the Saints trimmed the gap to 8-2. However, the Hawks added four runs of insurance in the top of the seventh. The Saints chipped away at the lead when Danni Wydra scored on a wild pitch, and Steinkamp’s RBI single plated Alex Carr with Maryville’s fourth run. The Saints were unable to inch any closer as the Hawks held on for the win.
Maryville returns to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at future GLVC foe McKendree.
