In a wild doubleheader Wednesday at McKendree, the Maryville softball team swept a pair of games from the Bearcats. The Saints roared back to win game one 11-6, then took the second game 8-2 in a game called early due to darkness.
Maryville looked to be in trouble as McKendree scored four runs in the first inning and added two more to build a 6-0 lead. The score remained the same until the Saints erupted for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kelsey Kapitzke walked to start the comeback, and Celci Mueller followed with a single. Jennifer Maynez worked a free pass to eventually load the bases, and Kelsey Barbeau drove in Maryville’s first run with a single. Alex Carr followed with another RBI single to continue the comeback. Molli Updegraff recorded a single that drove in two more runs as the Saints closed to 6-4. Karlie Twisselman then doubled in two more runs to tie the game. Shelby Steinkamp’s single up the middle pushed Maryville on top 7-6. As the Saints batted around, Kapitzke put down a sac bunt which plated another run. Mueller launched a double to cap Maryville’s remarkable nine-run outburst. The Saints took advantage of McKendree’s fielding woes to tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh as Maryville held on for a stunning 11-6 victory.
In the second game, the Saints scored one run in the top of the first to take the lead. Steinkamp singled and took second on a groundout. Kapitzke followed with an RBI single as Maryville went up 1-0. McKendree answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Saints responded with three runs in their next at bat. Twisselman and Steinkamp recorded back-to-back hits to ignite the burst, and the Bearcats hurt themselves with two errors as Maryville’s runs were all unearned. In the fourth, the Saints tacked on a run when Steinkamp walked and sprinted around to score on Sarah Graham’s RBI double. Maryville added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth, punctuated by Lacy Emrick’s two-run homer. Brittany Mayfield, who was the winning pitcher in game one, had three strikeouts and allowed only six hits in five innings to earn the victory in game two.
The Saints, who swept a doubleheader for the second time this season, improve to 8-22. McKendree falls to 11-5 on the year.
