Saints Advance to Finals of GLVC Tournament with 70-66 Win Over Quincy

Junior forward Abby Duethman hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the game as No. 5 seed Maryville registered a 70-66 upset of No. 1 seed Quincy in the semifinals of the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s basketball tournament. The Saints face Kentucky Wesleyan in the championship game Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
Duethman’s 3-pointer gave Maryville a 68-66 lead before Quincy missed on its subsequent possession, and the rebound trickled out of bounds giving the ball to the Saints. Maryville inbounded to Shelby Miller who was fouled with 9.7 seconds left. The freshman, who ranks ninth nationally in free throw percentage, calmly drilled both free throws for a 70-66 lead. Quincy’s final 3-point attempt misfired as the Saints sprinted into the GLVC finals in their first season of eligibility in Division II.
 
After a tightly played first half, the Saints led 38-37 with 15 minutes left in the game. Rita Flynn sank a jumper, and Deuthman nailed a 3-pointer to push the Saints to a 43-37 lead. Quincy made one free throw before Duethman scored again for a 45-38 lead with 12:53 remaining. The Hawks closed to 47-43 until the Saints scored six straight to build their biggest lead of the day. Breann Baker made one free throw, and JoAnn Thompson followed with two more at the stripe. Kate Childs scored on a layup to give Maryville a 52-43 lead with just under nine minutes left to go.
 
The top-seeded Hawks went on a 12-2 run to claim a 55-54 edge with 5:24 to play. Flynn hit one free throw to tie the game, but Quincy scored four straight points to take its biggest lead of the day at 59-55. Duethman hit a jumped to pull the Saints to within one, and Miller scored on a layup to hand the Saints a 62-61 lead with 2:29 remaining to set up a frantic finish.
 
Ali Schwagmeyer scored as Quincy retook the lead at 63-62 but Deuthman responded with a 3-pointer for a 65-63 Maryville lead with 59 ticks left. Karlee Gengenbacher answered with a trey for Quincy as the Hawks went up 66-65 with 40 seconds to play. The Saints pushed the ball right back at the Hawks and Duethman hit what would prove to be the game winner.
 
Duethman led the Saints with 23 points, tied her career high with 16 rebounds and handed out a game-high four assists. Miller added 14 points, including the game-clinching free throws in the waning seconds, while Thompson narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Gengenbacher and Schwagmeyer led Quincy with 14 points apiece, while Lucy Cramsey had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Saints improve to 18-11 overall and snapped Quincy’s 12-game winning streak as the Hawks fell to 21-7.
