The Maryville softball team battled in both ends of a softball doubleheader but visiting Missouri S&T posted wins by a 2-1 and 6-1 score Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.
In the first game, the Miners scored their only runs of the game in the top of the third inning. The Saints defense threw out a Missouri S&T runner at the plate, but the Miners pushed across two runs, one unearned to take the lead. Maryville nearly got a run back in the bottom of the third but also had a baserunner nailed at the plate trying to score. Jennifer Maynez singled to start the fifth, and Kelsey Barbeau drew a walk as the Saints threatened. However, both runners were stranded as the Miners worked out of trouble. In the bottom of the seventh, Lacy Emrick was set up as a pinch hitter, and she launched a home run that carried over the fence in right center. However, the Saints were unable to get the game-tying runner on board as Missouri S&T held on.
As in the first game, Missouri S&T put up two runs in the top of the third to take the early lead. The Miners added single tallies in the fourth and fifth. Maryville threatened in the fifth as Molli Updegrall beat out an infield single and moved to third on Shelby Steinkamp’s long single. The Miners kept Maryville from scoring, then added two insurance scores in the top of the seventh. The Saints attempted a rally in their last at bat. Meredith Brown singled straight back up the middle to start the seventh, and she took second on a ground out. Karlie Twisselman singled sharply to left field as Brown sprinted around for Maryville’s first score.
The Saints slip to 8-24 overall, 3-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Missouri S&T improves to 10-23, 7-11 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday as it hosts Drury for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
