Looking for its first Great Lakes Valley Conference wins, the Maryville softball team jumped out to an early lead in game one but Northern Kentucky rallied to eventually sweep a doubleheader. The Norse took game game one 8-4, them claimed an 8-3 win in the second contest.
In the first inning of the first game, Sarah Graham reached on a fielder’s choice and swiped second to get into scoring position. Kelsey Kapitzke drove her home with an RBI single and a quick 1-0 Maryville lead. The Saints doubled their lead in the bottom of the second when Danni Wydra walked and took second on a single. Meredith Brown drilled an RBI single to center for a 2-0 Saints lead.
Northern Kentucky tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth and it look a 4-2 lead with two more scored in the fifth. Maryville answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth when Kapitzke doubled in two more to score Brown and Shelby Steinkamp with the game-tying runs. However, NKU brought home four runs in the top of the seventh capped by a homer by Kaylin Steinmetz. The Saints were unable to bring the tying game to the plate as NKU held on.
In the second contest, the Norse struck for three runs in the top of the second before the Saints earned one back in the bottom of the frame. Tara Macias reached on an NKU error, and Jennifer Maynez doubled her in to draw Maryville to 3-1. NKU scored one run in the third and took control with four runs in the top of the fourth. The Saints pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth on when Macias doubled and Maynez brought her home with a hit. Maryville tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to bring the tying run to the plate.
Maryville is now 1-7 overall, 0-4 in the GLVC, while the Norse improve to 6-4, 3-1 in the conference. The Saints will host GLVC foe Lewis in a non-conference game Tuesday stating at Noon.
