The Maryville women’s basketball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 75-62 in the championship game of the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill. The GLVC title is the first for Maryville as the Saints are in their first season of postseason eligibility in Division II. Maryville will face Midwest Regional host school Ashland (Ohio) in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Friday, March 9.
Kentucky Wesleyan held a 52-50 lead with 11 minutes left before the Saints took charge with a 14-3 run. Abby Duethman tied the game and her 3-pointer gave Maryville a 55-52 lead at the 9:55 mark. Rita Flynn powered inside for a layup, and Duethman stole a pass and went the length of the court for a 59-52 lead. KWC hit one free throw, but Flynn spun inside for another layup and
Kate Childs drilled a 3-pointer for a 64-53 lead with 6:27 to play. The Panthers edged to within 10 points, but the Saints sealed the win with eight straight points. Miller hit a deep 3-pointer, and Childs had a layup.
Erica Lorton completed a three-point play to close out the Panthers.
Shelby Miller was named Tournament MVP, while
Abby Duethman and
Rita Flynn were selected to the All-Tournament squad. Duethman had a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Childs added 16 points. Flynn and Miller both chipped in 10 points apiece. The Saints win their fifth straight and improve to 19-11.
