MU-Upper Iowa Game 2 boxscore in PDF
The Maryville softball team swept a pair of non-conference games over Upper Iowa in games played at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Saints took game one 11-2 and closed out the afternoon with a 6-4 victory in the second game.
In the first contest, Upper Iowa took the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Maryville stuck for a single run in the bottom of the third when Danni Wydra doubled to start the inning, and Sarah Graham singled her in to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, the Saints erupted for 10 runs in the fourth frame to run-rule UIU. Maryville had 12 straight batters reach base capped by Karlie Twisselman’s triple as the Saints enjoyed their biggest output since scoring 16 runs Feb. 18, 2011. Julie Jouglard picked up the victory in the circle for Maryville.
In the second game, the Saints had to rally in the fifth inning for their third win of the season. The game started off well as Maryville pushed across two runs in the top of the second. Lacy Emrick launched a two-run homer to score Alex Carr and give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Maryville increased its lead to three as it pushed across an unearned run. Upper Iowa tied the game in the third frame and took the lead with one run in the fourth.
The Saints answered in the fifth inning with their comeback. Meredith Brown smashed a homer to start the inning, and Carr singled home Shelby Steinkamp with what would prove to be the game winner. Kelsey Kapitzke sealed the win in the top of the seventh with a solo shot. Jennifer Tobin picked up the win and Kristyn Caldwell closed out the game with three innings of scoreless relief to record a save.
