Powered by the bat of Jennifer Maynez, the Maryville softball team swept a home doubleheader for the first time this season. The Saints defeated Central Missouri 4-3 in game one and slugged out a 9-7 victory in game two. Maynez went 4-for-6 in the two games with two home runs, a double and drove in four runs.
In the first contest, the Saints claimed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Shelby Steinkamp singled, and Sarah Graham reached on a UCM error. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Kelsey Kapitzke put down a perfect bunt to score Steinkamp with the first run of the game. Kapitzke then stole second and, during the throw, Graham ran home to score the second run for Maryville. The Jennies tied the game with two runs in the top of the third setting the stage for Maynez. Kapitzke worked a walk, and Maynez launched a deep shot over the fence in left to put the Saints ahead 4-2.
UCM scored one run in the top of the sixth and was poised to take the lead. Maryville starter Brittany Mayfield departed after two outs in the sixth, and Kristyn Caldwell retired the Jennies in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, UCM put two runners in scoring position but Caldwell induced a grounder to short to preserve the one-run margin.
Game two was an offensive battle as at least two runs were scored in each of the first four innings. Central Missouri took the lead in their first at-bat, but the Saints answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first. Steinkamp walked and Graham reached on an error. Much like in game one, the duo had a double steal as both moved into scoring position. Kapitzke lashed a single right back up the middle to tie the game 2-2. Maynez then stuck again for a two-run homer to put Maryville ahead 4-2. UCM tallied one in the second, before Maryville added two more runs. Mollie Updegraff and Steinkamp were both aboard when Kaptizke launched a long single to left to bring them both home for a 6-2 lead.
In the third, the Saints kept the Jennies off the scoreboard before adding to their cushion. Danni Wydra singled to start the rally, and Steinkamp turned on a high pitch and drove it out of the park in rightfield for an 8-2 advantage and what would prove to be the game winner. Central Missouri closed the gap in the fourth but the Saints answered with a solo tally. With the bases loaded, Lacy Emrick drilled a single to left to drive in Kaptizke. UCM scored in the sixth to close to 9-7 but Maryville’s Julie Jouglard completed the game as the Saints improved to 11-31 on the season. Central Missouri falls to 19-26.
The Saints return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday at home against William Jewell which will also be Senior Day for Maryville. Game time is Noon.
