Kelsey Kapitzke launched two home runs as Maryville won the first game of a softball doubleheader 8-2 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Kapitzke became just the third different Maryville player to hit two home runs in one game and her six RBIs tie the school record. It was only the eighth time a Maryville player has blasted two home runs in the same game and was the ninth occasion any Saints softball player drove in six runs in one game. The Tritons bounced back to record a 3-0 win in the second contest.

In the top of the third, Shelby Steinkamp and Sarah Graham singled to start the offense. Kapitzke then drilled a three-run homer over the center field fence to stake the Saints to a 3-0 lead. The trio then repeated the effort in the fifth inning. Steinkamp singled down the line in left, and Graham beat out a bunt for a single. Kapitzke launched another three-run blast to center to give the Saints a 6-0 lead. Maryville used the long ball again to extend its lead to 8-0. Steinkamp walked, and Graham followed with Maryville’s third homer of the game for an 8-0 lead. Saints starter Kristyn Caldwell lost her bid for a shutout in the seventh inning but she went the distance and allowed just one earned run to record the victory in the circle.

UMSL scored single tallies in three different innings to hold off the Saints bid for a doubleheader sweep. Katie Wood smacked a solo home run in the first inning for the only offense the Tritons would need. Tara Macias walked and moved to second but the Saints stranded her in scoring position in the second inning. Maryville nearly tied the game in the third when both Graham and Steinkamp worked their way to second and third. UMSL (26-22, 15-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference) added solo shots in the third and fifth for all the offense in the game. UMSL’s Jena Boudreau kept the Saints bats silent in the game and allowed just two hits.

The Saints stand at 12-34 overall, 5-25 in the GLVC.
