Kelsey Kapitzke cranked her ninth home run of the season for the game-winning tally as the Maryville softball team earned a split of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Quincy. The Hawks won the opener 12-4 before the Saints rebounded with a 4-3 triumph in game two.

In the top of the first, the Saints grabbed the early lead. Shelby Steinkamp worked a walk and moved in scoring position on a wild pitch. Kapitzke smashed a double to right center to give Maryville a 1-0 cushion. The Saints held the lead until the Hawks broke through for five runs in the bottom of the third. Maryville answered with two scores in the top of the fifth. Steinkamp again keyed the burst with a walk and sprinted around to score on Sarah Graham’s RBI double. Jennifer Maynez followed by shooting a single thought the left side of the diamond as the Saints closed the gap to 5-3. However, the Hawks sealed the win with five runs in the home half of the fifth. Celci Mueller scored Maryville’s final run in the sixth.

Game two was scoreless until both teams put up three runs in the fourth inning. Lacy Emrick ignited Maryville’s outburst by drawing a free pass, and Danni Wydra followed with a single. Both runners moved up on a ground out before Steinkamp brought them both home with a RBI to left. Graham then scored Steinkamp with a RBI single for a 3-0 lead. The Hawks came right back and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Quincy loaded the bases in the fifth inning before the Saints threw out the potential go-ahead run, the setting the stage for Kapitzke’s homer. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Kapitzke’s blast to right field put the Saints ahead. In the bottom of the seventh, Quincy loaded the bases but Emily Chapman worked out of the jam with a strikeout to end the contest and pick up the win.

The Saints improve their record to 13-35 overall, 6-26 in the GLVC. The Hawks are now 24-25, 16-16 in the league. Maryville closes out the season with a doubleheader Sunday at Illinois Springfield.
