The Maryville softball team closed out the 2012 season with a flourish as they swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Illinois Springfield to finish the year with a three-game winning streak. The Saints downed the Prairie Stars 4-2 and 3-1 in the two games.
Maryville starter Julie Jouglard kept UIS off balance and only surrendered single scores in the third and fifth inning, setting the stage for a Saints comeback. Kelsey Kapitzke reached on a UIS error and dashed to third on Celci Mueller’s single. Karlie Twisselman walked to load the bases, and Danni Wydra’s RBI single scored Maryville’s first run. Molli Updegraff and Shelby Steinkamp singled to start the top of the seventh and ignited the Saints. A groundout pushed both runners to scoring position. Kapitzke singled Updegraff in to tie the game 2-2. When the Prairie Stars unleashed a wild pitch, Steinkamp sprinted home with the go-ahead run. Mueller capped off the outburst with an RBI single as Kapitzke scored an insurance run. Jouglard kept UIS off the board in the seventh to go the distance and pick up the win.
The Saints followed the same script and scored two late runs to take game two. Maryville scored in its first at bat when Sarah Graham tripled and scored on Kapitzke’s RBI single. Saints starter Kristyn Caldwell only allowed UIS one hit over the first four innings, but the Prairie Stars tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Graham singled with one out in the sixth, before Kapitzke delivered again in the clutch. She launched her 10th home run of the season to push the Saints ahead 3-1. UIS put two runners aboard in the sixth, but Caldwell induced a grounder to end the threat. In the seventh, she retired the first two Prairie Star hitters before an error opened the way. UIS (28-18, 20-12 GLVC) eventually loaded the bases, but Caldwell forced a popup to end the game. She surrendered only four hits in working the complete-game victory.
The Saints close their season with a 15-35 overall, 8-26 in the GLVC.
